So, as you would expect, news of the stolen shotgun traveled through our family pretty fast. We all kept an ear open just in case some stupid "person" opened their mouth not realizing we were around. No such luck...
A few days after we talked to the sheriff, my brother-in-law (Shane) called my dad with some interesting news.
Shane is an avid hunter. He enjoys the outdoors and is very knowledgeable when it comes to outdoor-sy things. So he knows quite a few things about guns, ammo, hunting techniques, etc.
So, back to the interesting news.
Shane said a friend (we will call him Joe) came to him during their lunch break and asked if he would be willing to look at a shotgun that he was interested in buying. Shane said, "Well sure, why don't you bring it here tomorrow and we will take a look at it." Joe said that he was going to get it appraised at Cabela's because he was interested in what the appraiser would say compared to the seller. Then, they went on to discuss what the asking price of the gun was, who had it for sell, the type of gun it was, etc. During this conversation, Shane began to realize that this gun sounded like Dad's. So, as any honest person would do, Shane informed Joe of the situation that was going on in our family. He said, "I hate to break it to you man, but the shotgun you are describing sounds a lot like the one my father-in-law had stolen from his work truck this weekend." Joe, was astonished at the news and said, "Well, I don't really plan on buying a stolen gun if that is the case! I'll do whatever I can to help."
So, after all this information was exchanged between my dad and Shane, my dad immediately called our local sheriff and told him the story. The sheriff told him to call the Sheriff Office in the county that Shane works in and tell them the story, since they don't have jurisdiction over that area he would not be able to give proper advice as to how to handle the situation. He then informed my dad that they would tell him what steps to take from there. My dad called the county sheriff office and once again told the whole story plus the interesting news he had just obtained. They told him, "Have your son-in-law do just as he was going to do, look at the gun, tomorrow. If he can identify the gun as yours have him take it into his custody, put it in his vehicle, and call us right away. We will then take over the situation from there if need be."
The next day, as you can imagine, we were all anticipating the outcome of Shane's "look-over" of the shotgun. Is it or is it not the stolen shotgun!?
During their lunch break, Joe came over with shotgun in tow. Upon taking it in his hands, Shane noticed that the gun case was similar to dad's, he unzipped the case and pulling the gun out inch-by-inch, began examining it. It was the same make and model as dad's (score), it had the same distinguishing marks as dad's (double score), then there it was, the give away sign, the engraving on the butt of the gun. (SCORE!SCORE!SCORE!) Shane looked at Joe and said, "I hate to say it man, but this belongs to my father-in-law." Joe simply said, "I don't want anything more to do with it, take it." Shane, then called the county sheriff's office told them he had the stolen shotgun in his possession. They said they would be right out to do some questioning and to start an investigation.
The last time dad talked to the sheriff's office they told him they would be keeping his gun in holding until the investigation was complete. There have been a chain of robberies going on and they need as much evidence as possible against the perpetrator(s). No names have been released at this time, but we can be assured that they are doing all they can to apprehend those responsible.
In all, dad's stolen gun had been found! In less than a week! (actual time, not based on my blogging time, keep in mind all this happened about 3 weeks ago.) All thanks to some poor man who didn't know he was about to buy a stolen gun.

Sorry it took me SO long to finish this blog. My Internet access was limited. But now, I have what I like to call "My magical spot of bliss!" A place right in the middle of my kitchen where I can pick up one signal bar of Internet. So, unlimited access is now available. I think I'm in heaven, well, not quite, but pretty close. So, as Kels has pointed out, I now have no excuse for not blogging. Which, this time, I will agree with her. But, only until "my magical spot of bliss" disappears :( Which, I hope will NEVER happen.
Again, sorry! And I hope to be blogging more often now!
